    I now feel in control of myself. My body, my health, my mind! Everything feels so much stronger and more centred. I'm learning about self discipline and mind over matter. I'm learning how to push harder through acts of kindness towards myself (I have a totally dorky encouragement mantra that I repeat over and over when I'm having trouble rowing). I'm so excited for where I've come and where I'm going.     Phil has been my personal trainer for 2 ½ years. I had never worked out at a gym and was nervous about the equipment and the atmosphere. I was a bit of a week-end warrior mainly doing biking and hiking. Phil has inspired me to work out regularly and constantly improve my fitness level. He works around my crazy schedule as a busy physician. He works around my fatigue due to long hours on call. He has nursed me through two injuries that set me back. He pushes me to do my best. I always feel safe using the gym equipment and appreciate his knowledge and professionalism. I will continue to work out with Phil as my personal trainer for as long as I am able.

    3 and 1/2 years ago, when I was 34 yrs "old" I knew I needed to do something to change my life and regain control of my health. I am the mother of 6 kids and the owner of a successful home daycare. My business was suffering and I couldn’t keep up with my kids. A friend directed me to the care of Phil Ortwein who was at the time working for a gym.

    I accepted the offer yet was anxious about even entering the doors of a gym. I weighed 276lbs and viewed the gym as a place where fit girls went to wear their sports tops and short shorts, neither of which appealed to me. During my very first meeting with Phil he managed to put me at ease, made me feel important and gave me the confidence to believe in myself. As I left that first meeting he asked me to be sure to follow up with him the results of a few upcoming medical appointments. I was amazed, and I did just that. I soon decided that this young man had more to offer me, that he could be a huge source of support and education. Non-judgemental and sensitive yet with a bit of a pushy side, so I decided to train with Phil.

    It was an interesting journey as I went from referring to a "push up" as a type of womens undergarment, a "burpee" as somethng a baby did after and 8 oz bottle and a "plank" as a piece of wood, to someone who craved the pain that came with those fitness related terms.

    In the first 6 months I lost a tremendous amount of weight, gained a ton of muscle and confidence. 6 months after that I continued to lose weight for a total loss of 155lbs. In the 2 and ½ years since I lost 155lbs I have maintained a weight of 129 lbs (a bit of muscle weight was put on). The road to health and fitness will always have some battles for me. I love the new lease on life I have been granted. Thanks Phil.
